Running a Sex Offender Check in Lafayette County
The Wisconsin Public Sex Offender Registry is the authoritative public lookup for people who report a Lafayette County residence. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains it. Search is free, no account is needed, and a CAPTCHA guards the live query. Lafayette County does not publish another full county registry, so a countywide search should use the registry's Lafayette filter rather than a general web search.
A result is a safety aid, not proof of a fresh offense or current supervision. Wisconsin registration can continue after active DOC supervision ends. The map also uses approximate GIS placement. Confirm identity with the photograph and physical details, read offense and status fields with care, and report suspected errors or noncompliance through the official channels rather than confronting anyone.
Lafayette Registry Runs Through DOC
DOC collects and updates registration facts under Wis. Stat. § 301.45. The law covers qualifying convictions and juvenile adjudications, certain mental-disease findings, Chapter 980 commitments, lifetime supervision, and some people registered elsewhere who reside, study, or work in Wisconsin. Public release and community notification operate under Wis. Stat. § 301.46.
The statewide scale helps explain why listing and supervision must not be treated as synonyms. DOC reported 27,404 registrants on July 1, 2025. Of those, 6,374 were incarcerated, 6,127 were actively supervised, and 14,903 were no longer supervised but still required to register. Those are Wisconsin totals, not a Lafayette County count.

The live registry offers Name Search, Geographical Search, and Community Notifications. Its response cap is 50, and list results paginate five rows at a time. Use more than one method when spelling, address changes, or rural location makes one query too narrow.
- Use Name Search when a spelling is known. Start with last name, then add first name and middle initial to narrow the result.
- For a countywide list, choose Geographical Search, In specific location, County, and Lafayette. A Darlington-only or ZIP-only search can omit other county locations.
- For a nearby-address check, choose Distance from this Address and a one-, two-, or three-mile radius. Treat each pin as approximate.
- Open a likely result and compare its photograph, aliases, physical description, status, residence, and conviction table. A name match by itself is not enough.
- Repeat the search on NSOPW for a cross-state question, especially near Lafayette County's Iowa and Illinois borders.

Results display names, aliases, and matching addresses in geographic mode, with list and map views. The current view paginates five rows.
Lafayette Registry Radius Limits
Lafayette County covers 634 square miles and includes small cities, villages, towns, and rural roads. A three-mile radius can be useful near a home or school route, but it cannot stand in for a countywide check. Search the full county, then add the known city, ZIP, or street-radius query. If a route crosses the state line, the Wisconsin radius still returns Wisconsin registrants rather than a complete multistate picture.
An empty result proves little by itself. A name may use a different spelling or alias. An address may be changing, and not all registration data are public. The site's 50-result cap can also make a broad result incomplete. Several focused searches and careful profile review provide a sounder check than one map glance.

What a Registry Profile Shows
A public profile separates identity, status, address, vehicle, and conviction facts. The offense table is not a police narrative. Conviction county can differ from current residence county, and conviction state may be another jurisdiction. Compliance status addresses registration duties, not whether the sentence has ended.

Public absence is not proof that DOC lacks a record. Section 301.46 controls what may be released and to whom.

The Wisconsin registry provides the richer state profile and exact Lafayette County filters. Use both when travel, family safety, or a nearby address involves Illinois or Iowa. NSOPW is a second official layer, not a replacement for Wisconsin's current profile and tip channels.

Registration Requirements and Levels in Wisconsin
Wisconsin does not label public profiles with federal SORNA Tier I, II, or III. It uses statutory registration-duration categories plus a separate notification process. Notification Levels 1, 2, and 3 describe how widely information may be shared. They are not fixed offense tiers, public risk scores, or registration lengths. Verification frequency and conditions depend on the person's actual legal status and DOC requirements, so no unsupported county schedule should be inferred.

Lafayette Registry Email Alerts
Community Notifications can send email when a registrant reports a home address near an address of interest. It offers the same one-, two-, and three-mile distance choices, or a city, county, or ZIP selection. Registration requires an email address and the Register action. Messages come from SOR.alerts@wi.gov, so that sender should be allowed.
The service has a Remove tab. Entering the registered email and selecting Remove triggers emailed instructions. DOC does not mail a notice if email fails, so an active address matters. Special Bulletin Notification is different: DOC sends a bulletin to local law enforcement in designated cases, and a Community Notification Core Team may choose the proper audience and method.
Lafayette Registry Sheriff Role
DOC, not Lafayette County, maintains registration and accepts registrant updates. A registrant who needs to update information should call the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry Program before visiting any office. The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is the local public-safety and community-notification agency. It may receive statutory information and share what is necessary for community protection. County sources do not publish separate registration hours, a local fee, or a fixed sheriff verification schedule.

Suspected noncompliance can be reported to the DOC Sex Offender Safe Tip Line at 1-877-234-0085. Use 911 only for immediate danger or observed unlawful conduct. Do not use the public tip form as an emergency route.
Lafayette Registry Residence Myths
Wisconsin has no single statewide rule placing every registrant a fixed number of feet from every school or park. Supervision terms, court orders, Chapter 980 placements, and municipal ordinances can impose different limits. Lafayette County's published ordinances and sheriff pages do not state one countywide registry buffer.
A profile map pin near a school therefore does not prove a violation. Contact DOC's tip line or the Lafayette County Sheriff so the agency can check the person's actual conditions. Public absence also does not prove a failure to register because Wisconsin law limits what DOC may display, and certain facts stay within law enforcement.
Lawful Use and Community Notification
Registry information supports personal, family, and community safety. It does not authorize confrontation. Wisconsin's notification statute permits the sheriff or police chief to share needed information with eligible people, groups, or the public when protection calls for it. The registry also forbids republishing its content as a separate database or directory without written permission.
